The Families come together
July 1,
2012 marked the beginning of a new chapter in Vanessa's and Vivan's life. They both
liked each other and had gathered their families to make the announcement of their marriage. Vanessa was pretty excited as a girl whose marriage got fixed would be. She wore a green chiffon saree, and co incidentally even Vivan turned up in a green
kurta. Her mom was very enthusiastic about the whole affair since this was the
first and the last marriage that would take place in their family. Her maternal
uncles were also present for the occasion who are more or less the pillar of
strength for her mom. Vanessa couldn't help but notice how happy everyone was for her.
The
program started at around noon. It was a small little ceremony with her and Vivan giving brief introductions about themselves and later their families declaring their marriage. In Marathi this program is called 'Supari phodne', with the maternal
uncle of the girl coming forward and making the announcement and then breaking the supari or
nutmeg with a stone in one go. If the supari breaks in the first attempt
itself, its supposed to be good luck. Her uncle, blew it at first go with a
bham!
Lunch
soon followed, and it was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S! Too bad Vivan did
not eat much. But the rest of his family licked their fingers. Vivan and Vanessa were silent all the while, exchanging a few glances, here and there. A bond was
beginning to connect. Her little cousins pulled his leg now and then by
addressing him as 'Jiju', to which he replied only with a smile. Guess he was
more nervous than she was. His cousins on the other hand, were much older than
both of them, and did a lot of silly teasing to both of them. It was all jolly good
and she liked his family.
Overall
it was a splendid day and her mom and the rest of my family were relieved that
the very first occasion had turned out to be so well.
